Field Care

Field care of your trophy is where a quality mount begins. Skinning, cooling and transportation are important things to consider when going on a hunting or fishing trip. On this page we offer some suggestions on how to take care of your trophy while in the field to ensure you get a quality mount. If a specimen is not taken care of in the field a quality mount is not always possible.

Gameheads and Lifesize

  • Be sure to cool the animal as quickly as possible. The longer a hide stays warm the more likely slippage of the hair becomes.
  • Never cut the throat on your animal. By doing so you cut the hair on the throat and it cannot be repaired to where it won't be noticed.
  • Never drag your animal, as dragging will destroy the hide. The ground acts as sandpaper to an animal hide.
  • For gameheads, make sure you leave enough hide on your capes. When skinning the animal, cut around the body at the midpoint lengthwise to ensure you have enough hide on your cape.
  • Never put your animal in a plastic bag. Plastic bags hold heat and will increase the likelihood of spoilage.
  • After the animal is sufficiently cooled out, it is okay to put in a plastic bag, just make sure to keep it cold.
  • Don't let your animal hide soak in a cooler of water as water is a breeding ground for bacteria that can spoil your hide.
